What's a "HomePage"?
Turn on a radio or a TV. The same station you were listening to or viewing when you turned it off comes on. Suppose instead that you had this option (and there are probably radios and TVs out there that give you this choice): set it to come on to your favorite station or channel no matter what was on when you turned it off. This would be your "HomeStation".
Whenever you start your
Web
browser to gain access to the WorldWideWeb, it goes to some website
somewhere. Your Web browser came with a pre-set HomePage. For
example, if you use Netscape and have never changed your HomePage, each
time you open Netscape, www.netscape.com
will
appear. You can of course change this so that every time you open
Netscape (or whatever your browser is),
www.shadesofmeaning.com
appears.

When do I use a "HomePage"?
If you have made www.shadesofmeaning.com your HomePage, it should appear on your screen each time your Web browser loads up -- unless your Browser is a dreaded HomePage Hog.
As you surf the InterNet (or if you are dealing with a HomePage Hog), www.shadesofmeaning.com will not always be on your screen. But, if you have made it your HomePage, you can get back to it literally with the click of a button.
Look up at the top of this screen. You should see something like http://shadesofmeaning.com/Homepage.htm" in a box. Right above that you should see a horizontal row of words or little pictures (icons) -- or both. Find the one that says Home or depicts a little house. If you click on that one with your mouse, your browser will take you to your HomePage.
So, if you want to read
today's Light On: Shades of Meaning
entry
and it's not on your screen, just click on the Home button! But,
first, you have to : [Make

What's a "Web browser"?
You wouldn't be reading this if you weren't already using a "Web browser", but you may not realize it. Some people are shown how to "get on the Net" and don't really understand what's going on.
To get to the InterNet, your computer must of course be connected to a phone or cable line. Then, you "dial up" a phone number to get to an "ISP" (InterNet Service Provider). Some ISP's (such as America Online and Prodigy) include a "Web browser" in what pops up when you get to them. You just need to look for a button or menu choice that says "Browser" and click on it.
Many local ISP's, however, do not automatically provide you with a Web browser. They merely give you access to the InterNet and serve as a post office where you send and receive e-mail. So, to "surf the Web" and get to all those www.abcdefg.com's out there, you need to use a Web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer or dozens of others that are available to your repertoire.

1. Click and drag the www.shadesofmeaning.com entry to the very top of your list so it is right there when you want to visit or
2. If your browser automatically puts your Bookmarks/Favorites in alphanumeric order, Edit the www.shadesofmeaning.com entry by labelling it "!!Shades of Meaning". Why the "!"? So that the entry will appear at the top of the alphanumeric list.

Watch out for the dreaded HomePage Hog!
Users have reported that, despite their best efforts, there are certain browsers (e.g. AOL and Prodigy) that do not go to your HomePage on startup. These HomePage Hogs open up at a website of their choosing -- usually something involving pushing their products.
If there is a way to defeat this tyranny, please let us know. Until then, those of you who are subject to this oppression will have to remember to [Make Shades of Meaning Your Home Page] and then click on the Home button each time you start your browser.
